The Protector Announced [May 16, 2008, 09:31 am ET] - 7 Comments

VideoGamer.com has first word on The Protector, a first- and third-person shooter in the works at new Polish developer Gingerbread Studios. Word is:

Newly formed Polish developer Gingerbread Studios has today announced The Protector, an all-new PC and Xbox 360 first/third person shooter said to feature visceral action, tactical stealth and an enthralling storyline.

The Protector focuses on the exploits of two very different characters: Jonathan Kane, a hardened British mercenary, and Jennifer Guile, a beautiful US archaeologist. The game begins when these former lovers are reunited following the murder of Jennifer's father by new terrorist organisation Scarlet Vengeance.

Scarlet Vengeance's attention soon turns to Jennifer, the only person who knows the location of a powerful Aztec which can be used for a devastating terrorist attack. With Jennifer's life under threat Kane must track her down and protect her from Scarlet Vengeance.

"Gingerbread Studios has taken the theme of South American mythology and masterfully injected it into a contemporary setting that reflects the escalating threat of global terrorism within the modern day world," said James Cato, CEO of Gingerbread Studios. "The Protector's two distinct playable characters and eclectic mix of action and stealth make it highly unique, while its branching, thrilling plot promises to keep gamers captivated till the end credits roll."

WoW Graphics Reboot Coming? [May 16, 2008, 09:31 am ET] - 40 Comments

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Q&A on Eurogamer discusses the upcoming expansion for Blizzard's MMORPG with Jeff Kaplan, Tom Chilton, and J. Allen Brack, with J. revealing along the way that they are probably going to start looking at rebooting the game's graphics with the expansion after Wrath of the Lich King, while acknowledging such a move has not gone perfectly when tried in other games in the past:

That's actually something we talk about every expansion. It's interesting, two games have really tried that before, Ultima Online tried it and EverQuest tried it as well, and in each case it was only somewhat successful. In each case a lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever. And so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, "meh, that's not really for me," that's not very exciting.

So I don't think there's really a clear model as to how to do that successfully. The model we have with Wrath of the Lich King allows people with high-end machines some additional graphical effects, and then we'll have some kind of fallback for the people who don't. Will we need a graphical update from the ground up at some point? Yep, probably. And I'm positive we'll talk about it next expansion.

The Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Website has a status report on the upcoming version 1.5 patch for Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, which is being held up a bit for additional polish:

Just a quick update on where things are at with the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars 1.5 game update. We're currently doing some last minute testing with id Software to track down a few issues that have turned up, but we don't anticipate this to take too much time. We really just want to make sure that all the issues we're aware of are actually addressed rather than pushing out an update with a big asterisk and a list of It'll-break-if-you do-this-ers attached to it.

Distribution is being sorted out at the moment as well and if there are no further complications, we anticipate having the update out next week. We'll try and keep you as updated as possible from here on out, so as soon as we've got a definite release date, you'll read it here first.

Celestial Impact [May 15, 2008, 7:52 pm ET] - 2 Comments

The Celestial Impact Website offers version 1.00 of Celestial Impact, as this free multiplayer-only first-person shooter has emerged from its extensive beta test. Here's word on the game and its use of deformable environments:

Celestial Impact is a team based multiplayer first person shooter (FPS) set in space on an asteroid with spherical gravity. What makes this FPS really special is that the landscape is fully deformable in all directions. Each player is equipped with, apart from a commonly seen weapon arsenal, a special tool called Dirtgun. With the Dirtgun, players can add or remove terrain during combat as they see fit, simply by aiming and firing the dirtgun. Depending on the chosen action, this will either add or remove a chunk of dirt from the landscape.

Ran in to a wall that is too high to jump over? No problem, just build a slope and walk over the wall, or perhaps dig a tunnel going under it. Need a breather from intense combat? No sweat, dig a cave and go hide inside. Since the layout and flow of the landscape in the maps depends on the player’s actions, playing a particular map will be a different experience each time.

  • Valve on DX10
The PCGH Left 4 Dead Q&A, part 2 talks with Valve's Doug Lombardi about techie stuff, getting Valve's take on the whole DirectX 10 situation: "The other thing that is worth mentioning too is to run DX10 natively under the API you have to have both the card and vista. If you google to the Steam hardware survey where we poll peoples machines on Steam you can see that right now there is only about thirteen percent of those people that have both, the DX 10 card and Vista. So you have to look at that as well and say is it worth to investing for thirteen percent of the audience."
